ABOUT

Join the Indiana Coalition for Public Education for a screening of Rise Above the Mark, a documentary narrated by Peter Coyote that brings to light the heartbreaking realities of public education in Indiana. It’s the story of what happens when politics enters the classroom. The film takes a hard look at current corporate reforms, which restrict vision, decrease funding, demoralize teachers, and aim to turn students into test-taking machines. While the focus is on Indiana’s struggles with school privatization, schools throughout the United States are experiencing similar pressures in the era of Betsy DeVos. There will be a relevant panel discussion immediately following the film. Panelists will include Dr. Laura Hammack, Superintendent of Brown County Schools, Kathleen Fox, retired educator of Monroe County Community School Corporation, and Charity Scott, Executive Director of IPS Community Coalition. The film will be introduced by its creator Dr. Rocky D. Killion, Superintendent of West Lafayette Community School Corporation. Sponsors include Indiana University School of Education, Democracy for Monroe County, and Robert Arnove.
