Join us for a free special concert at a historic church on Bloomington’s Near West Side! Vibraphonist Dick Sisto, pianist Steve Allee, bassist Jeremy Allen, and drummer Mike Hyman will perform sacred, spiritual and contemplative jazz composed by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn, as well as music written by Sisto for a documentary about the renowned monk and spiritual writer Thomas Merton. Sisto will discuss his friendship with Merton (who was also a jazz fan), and there will be a brief presentation about sacred jazz as well as a reception with the musicians following the concert. This event is made possible in part by a grant from the Bloomington Arts Commission and support from the Wesley Living-Learning Center.
